If you love Downton Abbey as much as we do, you probably identify with one or more of the wonderful cast of characters. So pump up your pomp and sip your tea as we to take a humorous look at how Downton's beloved characters fit the nine Enneagram types.

Type One: The Reformer – Lady Mary

Type Ones are all about striving for excellence and holding high moral standards. Lady Mary Crawley perfectly embodies this type. While scrutinizing the dinner arrangements, she’s likely to critique the decorum of every guest with a discerning eye and a raised brow.

With her strong desire for order, Lady Mary painstakingly curates every aspect of her surroundings. From ensuring the cutlery is organized flawlessly to guiding the family through crises, she leaves no stone unturned in her pursuit of perfection.

Type Two: The Helper – Mrs. Hughes

The beloved Mrs. Hughes is the heartbeat of Downton Abbey. As a Type Two, she embodies the nurturing spirit, always prioritizing the needs of others over her own. Whether it’s orchestrating the complicated love lives of the staff or managing the daily chaos, she’s always the first to step up.

Mrs. Hughea organizes family gatherings and provides emotional support, revealing a genuine connection as a trusted friend. Her commitment to ensuring everyone feels valued reveals her as a true Helper.

Type Three: The Achiever – Matthew Crawley

Success and ambition define the Type Three personality, and Matthew Crawley is the ideal representation. When he steps into the role of heir to Downton Abbey, he doesn’t just manage the estate; he transforms it.

Picture him leading a meeting with financial advisors, confidently presenting innovative ideas while charming Lady Mary. As a classic Achiever, he exhibits a relentless drive to prove himself, embodying the notion that ambition can be both persuasive and effective. Matthew showcases the Three''s essence of triumph and determination.

Type Four: The Individualist – Lady Edith

Type Fours are known for their rich emotions and creative expressions. Lady Edith embodies this trait beautifully. She dwells on the negative in the beginning of the series, comparing herself to her sister Mary, and wallowing in self-pity. She finally overcomes emotional hardships by channeling her experiences into creative writing and expressing herself as a strong and successful individual.

Lady Edith's writing serves as a refuge for her, compelling her to reflect deeply on self-discovery and finally being who she was born to be. As the series progresses, we watch Lady Edith transform from dowdy and plain to a happy acceptance of herself as reflected in more colorful clothing and a more daring, bohemian lifestyle, which is often the case with type Fours.

Type Five: The Investigator – Tom Branson

Tom Branson is a commoner with an insatiable desire to learn, grow, and change the status quo. As a Type Five, he navigates the complexities of aristocracy with curiosity, insight, and a bold sense of justice.

Not one to shy away from a profound discussion, he often finds himself diving deep into philosophical debates at social gatherings. His inquisitive nature shines through in his efforts to balance tradition with progress. Tom’s insightful observations remind us that intelligence paired with contemplation can lead to significant change.

Type Six: The Loyalist – Bates

Mr. Bates is the epitome of loyalty and commitment, representing the Loyalist archetype perfectly. He's loyal to Lord Grantham, and his steadfast nature makes him trustworthy without question.

Despite facing numerous hurdles, his dedication does not waver. His serious demeanor might suggest he’s bracing for another tumultuous situation, but his unwavering loyalty makes him a rock for both the Crawley family and his friends.

Type Seven: The Enthusiast – Daisy & Lady Rose MacClare

Daisy, our bubbly enthusiast, thrives on spontaneity and adventure. As a Type Seven, she wears her heart on her sleeve and pours herself into every experience, celebrating even the smallest joys—whether it’s a new recipe or a budding romance with Alfred.

Her infectious optimism encourages those around her to explore new horizons. Imagine her as that friend who encourages you to step outside your comfort zone for a spontaneous day trip! Sevens are good at reminding us that seeking joy can motivate us to embrace life as an adventure.

Lady Rose is also a type seven. She lived her life as fully, and dangeroulsy, as possible, and possessed an insatiable, fun-loving optimism, spontaneously seeking new experiences, which included lots of parties.

Type Eight: The Challenger – Dowager Countess Violet Crawley

Enter Violet Crawley, the formidable Dowager Countess, representing the Challenger archetype. As a Type Eight, Violet exhibits a fierce determination and speaks her mind without hesitation.

With a sharp wit and a knack for asserting her opinions, she is not afraid of conflict. Whether she’s advising her family or throwing around scathing retorts, Violet ensures her voice is heard. Her unapologetic approach serves as an inspiring reminder that sometimes it takes a fearless heart and strong leadership to face obstacles head-on.

Type Nine: The Peacemaker – Carson

Carson, the gentle butler, plays a vital role in maintaining harmony at Downton Abbey. As a Type Nine, he seeks peace amid the chaos surrounding him.

He helps defuse tensions that arise during family squabbles, portraying a calming influence. (Remember his fatherly relationship with Lady Mary.) Carson’s mere presence projects reassurance—like a lighthouse guiding ships to safety during a storm. In a world with increasing conflicts, Nines remind us of the importance of unity and harmony.
