I usually have several storylines darting about in my mind at any given time and right now I finally get to begin brainstorming and outlining a plan for a new book. I usually dive in as a "panster" having a good idea where I'm going but, this time, I'm using Randy Ingermanson's "snowflake method" to begin.
Today I spent the recommended hour of writing a one-sentence description of my new story idea in a 15-25 word blurb. I came up with the following:
· An abused and neglected wife in Turn of the Century America escapes to France with her two children to rebuild her life (22)
· A neglected wife in late 19th Century America escapes to France to rebuild her life (15)
· An abused, neglected woman separates from her husband to rebuild her life in France at the Turn of the Century (20)
· An abused wife escapes her marriage to discover mystery and romance in Turn of the Century France (17)
· An abused wife escapes with her children to France, where she discovers new life in mystery and romance at the Turn of the Century (24)
· A psychologically abused wife escapes to find new life, mystery and romance in Turn of the Century France (18)
· A psychologically abused and neglected wife escapes with her children to discover new life, mystery and romance in Turn of the Century France (23)
Next, I did some rough outlining for the first 2-3 chapters of the story, roughly following the storyline of "The Durrells in Corfu." I want similar highs and lows with well-developed characters and a large dose of humor in my story. I also want to highlight the beauty of France's people, language, nature and culture. Though I have a background as a psychologically abused and neglected wife, I want to use my experience and that part of the story as only a brief introduction to this book, focusing primarily on what is beautiful, mysterious, humorous, right and good in the world.
To be honest, I've shelved this book idea for now, but my creative juices are flowing in another direction!
